Review of Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney

Sometimes I Lie, published in 2018, is a psychological thriller that explores mental illness, codependence, and revenge.  The story left me thinking and wondering long after I finished it.  I couldn’t put the book down, and I still don’t know for sure what was a lie and what wasn’t.

Amber Reynolds is thirty-five years old and married to Paul.  She has a sister named Claire.  Amber and Paul have no kids, but Paul really wants to be a father.  Claire is married with two young children and seemingly has a perfect life.

One day, Amber wakes up but can’t move, speak, or open her eyes.  She’s in a coma after suffering injuries in a car accident.  The police don’t know who was driving the car, and neither does Amber.  Additionally, someone is trying to kill her while she’s comatose, and she’s helpless to stop this person.

Sometimes I Lie tells stories of the distant past, the recent past, and the present as they converge into one.  Through these different storylines, we eventually learn who was driving the car and who is trying to kill Amber.  We also learn other things about Amber’s life and her relationships.  But are these things real, or are they lies?  If you appreciate the thrilling nature of an unreliable narrator, then this novel will please you.
