Murder at the Lakeside Library, published in 2021, is book one in the Lakeside Library Mystery series. Currently, there are two books in the series.
In Murder at the Lakeside Library, Rain Wilmot, a widow in her thirties, returns to Lofty Pines, Wisconsin from Milwaukee. She moves into her family’s summer cabin on Pine Lake, next door to her childhood friend, Julia, and Julia’s husband, Nick. Julia’s brother, Jace, is a local police officer.
In the past, Rain’s mother would open the cabin’s expansive library to the community every summer. However, this year, Rain’s mother is out of town, leaving the task to Rain. Julia and Marge, an older lady with a dog named Rex, assist Rain in getting the library ready to open.
One day while helping out at the library, Marge lets Rex off leash to run around the cabin’s property. Rex promptly discovers a dead body. The dead guy turns out to be Thornton Hughes, who was rumored to be having an affair with Rain’s mother. Rain’s father, despite also being out of town, becomes a suspect because of the rumored affair. Of course, Rain wants to clear her dad’s name, but she can’t get in touch with either of her parents to do so. So, she and Julia begin their own investigation.
The lakeside setting of Murder at the Lakeside Library is beautiful. I felt like I was there among the trees, the humid breeze, and the sparkling water of the lake. The mystery itself was pretty decent as well. There were stolen identities, a hidden rare currency, a missing jacket and key, and several family secrets.
However, it was only luck that saved Rain and Julia from becoming the killer’s next victims. When they went to confront the killer, they both forgot their cell phones, and Rain wasn’t even wearing shoes. Yet, by some miracle, they overpowered him with no help from the police. In the end, though, it worked out. The killer was caught, and Rain met a family member she never knew existed. Rain also decided that Lofty Pines would be her home now.
