Do you know the Leap Year Poem? It goes like this:
April, June, and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
Excepting February alone,
And that has twenty-eight days clear
And twenty-nine in each leap year.
I don’t know who came up with the schedule of days in each month that’s set forth in the Leap Year Poem (and I’m not going to do the research to find out because I just don’t care). But I don’t like this schedule. It’s too random and non-sensical to me. I like order. I like things to make sense. I don’t want to have to recite a poem every time I need to figure out how many days are in a certain month. It’s too much work when it could be so easy.
There are 365 days in each non-leap year and 366 days in each leap year, which occurs every fourth year. There are always 12 months no matter what type of year it is. If you divide 365 by 12, you get 30 with a remainder of 5. Logically, this would mean that 7 months have 30 days and 5 months have 31 days. If you divide 366 by 12, you get 30 with a remainder of 6. Logically, this would mean that 6 months have 30 days and 6 months have 31 days. Using these figures, I’ve come up with the following schedule:
January through June will always have 30 days no matter what type of year it is;
July will have 30 days in non-leap years and 31 days in leap years; and
August through December will always have 31 days no matter what type of year it is.
Doesn’t that make more sense? It’s so much easier to remember and requires no rhyming to figure out. Who do I contact to make this happen?
But in all seriousness, I haven’t been reading much the last several weeks. I’m anxious right now because it’s the height of the Atlantic hurricane season. Every year between August 1st and October 15th, I’m a nervous wreck. This time of year, I find it difficult to enjoy the things I usually enjoy. I really enjoy reading, and this time of year robs me of that joy.
Therefore, I’m not posting a book review this week. I’m not able to post about my Brunswick Beaches Mysteries series, either. If reading is difficult for me right now, writing fiction is impossible. However, September is already a third gone. I’m hoping with each day that passes, a little bit of my joy will return and my reading will go faster.
I hope you return next week to find out how it’s going.
