Hench, published in 2020, is a novel about superheroes, villains, and the normal human beings caught in the middle. Anna is one of the normal people who works as an assistant to villains, aka a hench. As a hench, she is automatically an enemy of superheroes but without any powers to defend herself.
When Anna accompanies her villain boss to a televised kidnapping, she is accidently injured by the superhero known as Supercollider, who has come to the rescue. Her injuries are so severe that she is no longer useful to her villain boss, and she ends up getting fired. With nothing to do while she recovers, Anna fixates on the damage done to her by a superhero. She begins researching just how much damage, in both lives and property, superheroes do. When she discovers how extensive the damage is, she publishes her findings on a blog. The blog eventually catches the attention of supervillain Leviathon, who offers her a job. At first, Anna loves her work, which mostly entails pranking superheroes in an effort to distract them from their heroism. However, her work eventually leads to new injuries by Supercollider, which leads to an all-out war between Leviathon and Supercollider.
Hench is fast-paced and uncomplicated even in light of the fact that the villains are the protagonists while the superheroes are the antagonists. Never once did I want the superheroes to win. Never once did I want the villains to fail. Other than the very ridiculous body horror towards the end of the book, Hench is a super-entertaining read.
