Review of The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary

The Road Trip, published in 2021, follows twenty-somethings Dylan and Addie on their trip to a second chance at love.  Dylan and Addie had a summer fling in France that turned into the real deal back in their native England.  However, difficulties arose in the real world.  They broke up.  Then a couple of years later, they’re forced into close proximity during a road trip.  Therein starts their second chance.

Romance novels have been on my shit list lately because of my own personal issues, but I figured I’d give The Road Trip a try because it was supposed to be a sweet romance with no graphic sex.  While the part about no graphic sex is true, I don’t know if I’d categorize this romance as sweet.  The problem I had with The Road Trip was the constant presence of a third party who intentionally tried to sabotage Dylan and Addie’s relationship.  The fact that this person actually broke these nice kids up and kept them apart for almost two years was not sweet.  Instead, it was a little heartbreaking.

The message I take from The Road Trip is that love leaves you vulnerable, and others can take advantage of that vulnerability.  In this case, someone close to Dylan and Addie took advantage, pushing the relationship’s every insecure button until it fell apart.

Don’t get me wrong, though.  The Road Trip wasn’t bad.  We get to see both Dylan and Addie mature, and we get to see them fall in love again.  We also get to see them stand up to their saboteur.  And it wasn’t so heartbreaking that I was in tears.  if you hate to cry, you don’t have to worry about that here.  No, The Road Trip ended on a happy note, and even the saboteur turned out to be not so bad after all.
