Review of The Couple in the Photo by Helen Cooper

The Couple in the Photo is about two married couples who are best friends.  Lucy is married to Adam.  Cora is married to Scott.  The four of them are best friends.  Even their kids are best friends.  They have perfect lives, or do they?

Cora, Scott, and Adam became friends during college.  Lucy came along later to complete the quad.  For years, everything was perfect.  Then Lucy saw a photo of Scott with another woman, and their perfect lives fell apart, piece by piece.  Lies, gaslighting, murder, cover-ups.  The Couple in the Photo has all these things and more.

Lucy is the main character, and almost the entire story is told from her point of view (more on that later).  We, as the reader, follow her as she goes from happy to concerned to confused to suspicious to frightened until she finally learns the truth.  In the end, she’s heartbroken, and her perfect world is shattered.  Will she pick up the pieces or let the events destroy her?

The Couple in the Photo was a quick read, but the gaslighting was triggering for me.  Lucy didn’t let it deter her, though.  So I was happy to read her story through to the end.  The only thing I could’ve done without were the passages throughout the book from the murderer’s point of view.  To me, they were unnecessary and interrupted the pace and flow of the story.  Luckily, these passages are italicized to easily identify them and skip if that is your preference.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed the story.  I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the truth to come out.  And, even though I guessed who the murderer was before the big reveal, there were other surprises I didn’t guess.
