Cliff Iverson wants to kill his ex-boss for many reasons, the most important of which is his ex-boss’s insistence on releasing a product that could potentially kill the company’s customers. The other reasons involve the deaths of two of Cliff’s co-workers.
Gemma Lindly wants to kill her boss for taking all the credit for Gemma’s ideas and achievements. Even worse, Gemma’s boss is blackmailing her into essentially being her slave.
Doria Maye also wants to kill her boss, who has essentially killed Doria’s acting career. The reason he killed her career – she slept with someone else after refusing to sleep with him.
All three now attend McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts where they are learning the art of murder and how to get away with it. Graduating means they have accomplished their goal of “deleting” their target. Failing means they are the ones who are “deleted.”
Murder Your Employer was published in 2023, but the events take place in the 1950s. The setting hops all over the place, with the actual location of the school never revealed. Not even the students know the location, as they are sedated and blindfolded while being transported to and from the school. Even more clever was the author’s ability to create an atmosphere of high intelligence and academic prowess at the school. I imagine the conservatory, although murder is the sole subject matter, would easily fit into the Ivy League.
Apparently, Murder Your Employer is the first novel in a series, as the subtitle is The MacMasters Guide to Homicide, Vol. One. I’m interested to see if a second novel ever materializes since the ending leaves the future of the “project” up in the air. The ending could very well have been the death knell for future books. However, since Murder Your Employer was set so far in the past, there’s plenty of time for someone new to come along and restart the “project.” If book two is published, it’ll be pushed to the top of my TBR list.
