Review of Save What’s Left by Elizabeth Castellano

Kathleen and Tom have been married for many years and are now empty nesters.  Tom gets bored and leaves Kathleen for adventure.  Kathleen, in turn moves from Kansas to a beach house on Long Island.  However, Kathleen soon butts heads with her uber rich neighbors and the corrupt town officials enabling her neighbors’ bad behavior.  Then Tom, having determined that his adventure was even more boring than his marriage, returns to annoy Kathleen.  But the two eventually find common ground over their mutual disgust for the government corruption surrounding them.

I found Save What’s Left to be equal parts funny and frustrating.  Kathleen moved to the beach for a calm, quiet life but found only chaos and obstacles.  Her frustration was palpable.  Yet, she never gave up, not even when the corruption ended up poisoning her water supply and landed her in the hospital.  Nevertheless, Save What’s Left had me chuckling numerous times.  It should be no surprise that, even with all their money, none of these characters were happy or chill or even trying to relax.  The message Save What’s Left sent was that money corrupts, money causes chaos, and money doesn’t make people happy.  Anyone living in the real world already knows this, but Save What’s Left packages the message in a humorous tale of the rich battling the rich.

There was one character, though, that annoyed me to no end.  Josie is Kathleen’s childhood friend and lives in the beach town to which Kathleen relocated.  Unfortunately, Josie is also irresponsible and corrupt.  She cheats on her husband and lets Kathleen down several times.  Yet, she never suffers any negative consequences.  I hated Josie and wished bad things upon her.  I was, of course, disappointed.  At the very least, I wished she had gotten dumped by both her husband and Kathleen.  I so badly wanted to see her husband kick her out of the house and Kathleen refuse to give her a place to stay.  I really wanted Kathleen to tell Josie to f*ck right off.  But, nope.
